“Talent is God-given. Be humble.
Fame is man-given. Be grateful.
Conceit is self-given. Be careful.”

John Wooden, Basketball player and coach.

At some time in our life we probably all dream of being famous or at least we hope to impress people by what we do or who we are. We often see the famous people of our world in the media and witness even the personal parts of their lives. We read about the invasion of the press into their lives and talk about whether that should simply be expected by anyone who is ‘public figure’. We hear discussions about the importance of role models and the pressure of scrutiny of the critics. How much is fame a blessing and how much is it a burden or even a ‘curse’?

What do you think about fame and what do you think of how the famous conduct their lives ‘in the spotlight’? Which famous people do we truly admire?

Questions we might discuss are:

  • Would you like to be famous? If yes, what would you like to be famous for?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of being famous?
  • How much does wealth impact the likelihood of becoming famous?
  • With fame comes a degree of responsibility. What responsibilities do you think famous people have?
  • Do you think that famous people today should just accept that they can no longer live a truly private life?
  • Who is the person you MOST admire in history? Explain how you feel about him or her.
  • So overall, what do you think about fame – is it more a blessing or a burden?

Come and join our Talk About on Monday 15 March at 7.30 pm, share your idea and make friends.
