TALKABOUT – IS HONESTY ALWAYS THE BEST POLICY?
Most people would say that it is very important, to tell the truth. Do they (and we) think that we must always tell the truth, or do we actually think that sometimes it is all right to hide the truth from others, to tell a half-truth or even a lie? How does truthfulness or lack of it impact our communities and societies?
What is Truth? Of course, there are uncountable truths but it is interesting to consider what truths we believe to be absolute, especially where moral issues are concerned.
Let’s discuss Honesty, Trust and Truth and find out where we agree and where we do not.
Questions we might discuss are:
- Who do you trust the most? Why?
- Who don’t you trust? Why?
- What characteristics would you expect to find in a trustworthy person?
- Are there times when it is better not to tell the whole truth or to actively conceal the truth?
- If we want to be truthful to one another, does that include telling one another things which may offend? If yes, think of examples. Can we tell painful truths kindly?
