People become attached to their burdens sometimes more than the burdens are attached to them.

George Bernard Shaw, an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist and political activist.

Stress is a normal part of life and at times, it serves a useful purpose. Stress can motivate you, drive you forward, giving energy to what needs to be done. On the other hand, if stress increases, or cannot be relieved or becomes a dominating state of mind, it can seriously affect both mental and physical health, causing illness that interferes with studies, work and family life. Stress-related illness has become one of the leading reasons for time off work and is increasing its grip on university students, frequently expressing itself as anxiety and depression.

So, is stress a 21st-century terror? Or, is it something that when controlled, is a 21st-century strength, putting determination and energy behind life, behind research, behind ongoing scientific discovery, resulting in real progress for mankind? Is stress both a blessing and a ‘curse’ to our current times? What do you think?

These are questions we might discuss:

  • Everyone is unique. What things tend to cause you significant stress?
  • Do you think stress is ever truly good, useful, or necessary?
  • Have there been times when being stressed has motivated you, giving you the determination to get the task done?
  • Are there places to which you go which bring relief from stress?
  • Who or what helps you to restore peace in you when times are stressful?
