  • Post category:Events

A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act.

Mahatma Gandhi

Easter is one of the two most important festivals celebrated in the UK but it can be a very confusing time for international students who come from countries where it is not celebrated. You will see evidence that it is approaching but you may well be very surprised by what you see: shop shelves full of chocolate eggs, chicks, rabbits and ‘hot cross buns’; Easter cards decorated with crosses, eggs and rabbits. What is Easter about? For many Christians, the largest religious group in the UK, Easter is an extremely important festival, while for many UK households the festival has, like Christmas, become a non-religious event. Why? What do these things mean? How do British people celebrate Easter and what do the different symbols mean?

Questions we might discuss are:

  • Have you heard of Easter before? What do you think it is about?
  • What do you think British people are celebrating at Easter?
  • Do people celebrate Easter in your own country? How do they celebrate it?
  • What is the significance of hot cross buns, chocolate eggs, chocolate rabbits and yellow chicks? Have you understood this interesting mix of symbols?
  • Do you know the origin of the Christian Easter Festival? Do you know what the Bible says about what happened to Jesus at that time, and why?
  • Do you think there is value in giving something up for a time to change your priorities?
