You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.

C.S. Lewis, 20th century British academic, writer and theologian.

What gets you up in the morning? Is it simply the fact that you are obliged to get out of bed and prepare for your day of study or is there something else that motivates you? Some people seem to ‘take hold of their life with both hands’, motivated by something or someone that gives them energy while others need considerably more help to give them the strength to make the most of each day. Ambition, the desire to please parents, the determination to achieve high marks, fear of ‘failure’ or perhaps some kind of spiritual conviction can all be strong motivating factors for students but there are always ‘enemies’ that oppose our energy. Cold mornings, tiredness, boredom, loneliness, struggle with studies can all take away our motivation to keep trying hard. Of course, this battle is not unique to students.

So, what motivates you in life? What gives you a desire to achieve? Cultures vary in how much emphasis they place on certain aspects of life and character. It is interesting to learn from both other societies and individuals what matters most to them, and to understand what motivates them in their day-to-day activities.

These are questions we might discuss:

  • In what ways has your own culture shaped your attitude to life? Please give examples.
  • Who or what motivates you in your education?
  • What do you think is your proudest accomplishment in life so far?
  • Have you ever needed to find the motivation to overcome something?
  • What do you think about C.S. Lewis’s statement above?
  • What is something that you want or hope to do in life that keeps you motivated?
